TN Private Bus Strike Today: 7,000 Buses Off Roads Over Fare Freeze and Free Travel Expansion

Private bus services across large parts of Tamil Nadu are staying off the road for 24 hours from midnight on 29 September 2026. Operators say passenger fares have been frozen since 2018 while diesel and spare-part costs have surged, and they oppose an expansion of the state’s free travel scheme for women that is due on 2 October. Chennai, Madurai, Nagercoil and Udhagamandalam are outside the token strike, according to federation leaders who spoke to reporters on Monday.

Who is striking, and for how long?

The Federation of Bus Operators Association of Tamil Nadu announced a one-day token strike from midnight on 29 September to midnight on 30 September. Federation president K. Thangaraj and secretary D.R. Dharmaraj said around 7,000 private buses run in the state and form a major share of intercity and town services outside the exempted cities.

BusinessLine and DT Next reported that the sector employs roughly three lakh people and moves lakhs of daily passengers. A short stoppage can therefore ripple into late arrivals for workers, students and market traffic in districts that lean heavily on private stage carriages.

Why operators say the maths no longer works

Operators’ core demand is a fare revision after eight years. They say fares were last revised in 2018 when diesel was about ₹64 a litre, and that the fuel now costs over ₹100 a litre. Thangaraj told reporters the industry is running at about a 65% loss and that without a revision the private bus sector risks becoming unviable—claims carried by CNBC-TV18 and BusinessLine.

They also point to a Madras High Court direction from March last year, after a federation petition, asking the state to seek views from operators and the public on fare revision. Operators allege that after consultations, further action did not follow.

Free travel expansion from 2 October is the second flashpoint

The federation also objects to expanding women’s free travel on more categories of government buses from 2 October. State transport undertakings get subsidy support for the scheme, they argue, while private operators get no matching compensation and fear passengers will shift further toward free government services.

Thangaraj said the government should either extend the free scheme to private buses with subsidy support or revise fares quickly so private operators can stay viable. The Times of India quoted district association voices making the same livelihood argument in Namakkal and elsewhere.

What this means for passengers today

If you travel on private buses outside Chennai, Madurai, Nagercoil and Udhagamandalam, expect cancelled or sparse services through the 24-hour window. Plan with government buses, shared cabs, or trains where available, and allow buffer time for peak-hour crowding on remaining routes.

The federation has framed the stoppage as a one-day warning. Leaders have said further action may follow if there is no response—without announcing a second date yet.
